Discussions post
1. After having read the chapters assigned for this week, think about the meanings of ‘gender’ and ‘sex.’ How do definitions guide (or even govern) our perception of something/someone? What would be the effect on society if there were more than two genders? In your view, is it possible to change definitions of people and groups of people? How? 2. This week’s discussion is based on the fictional story “X: A Fabulous Child’s Story.” This reading is available in your week 2 unit. What do you think about the story? What are the societal structures that influence X’s gender development? Have these same structures played a role in your own gender development? Do you think X’s experience will one day become reality for future generations? What are the potentially positive and negative effects of such a neutral upbringing? 3. Before discussing this week’s topic, you need to familiarize yourself with some women’s and men’s movements. This will allow you to engage in a better-informed discussion. Please, check out these web sites and pay attention to the values, issues, and beliefs they promote. Do you think men should work to restore traditional male prerogatives and social power, become more sensitive themselves, or change society? Which women’s movement do I agree with (if any)? To what extent do you think we should work to ensure that women have equal rights and opportunities within existing systems (liberal feminism) or should work to change the systems to incorporate traditionally feminine values and concerns (cultural feminism)? 4. Have you observed instances of classifying women or men by stereotypes identified in this chapter on organizational communication? How are these stereotypes imposed on workers? How might workers resist being stereotyped? Now that you understand distinctions among equal opportunity laws, affirmative action, goals, quotas, and diversity training, how do you evaluate each? Look forward to your comments! 5. Watch children’s programming on Saturday morning. Are male characters more prominent than female characters? What differences, if any, do you see in the activities and appearances of male and female characters?6. Is bombing abortion clinics and killing medical professionals who provide abortion reproductive violence? If bombings and threats of them discourage medical professionals form performing abortion or if fear of harm discourages women from going to clinics, is that interference with their right to choose whether, when and with whom to reproduce?7. Watch prime-time coverage of sports on ESPN or another channel. Make a record of how much time is devoted to women’s and men’s sports and how often reporters comment on male and female athletes’ dress and appearance. Are the patterns you identify consistent with those discussed in this chapter?8. Reflect on the article posted in this week’s folder. How have same-sex families been portrayed in the media? Do you agree with the arguments presented in this study? Why or why not? X: A Fabulous Child’s Story — by Lois Gould © 1972 Once upon a time, a baby named X was born. This baby was named X so […]

Personal and Professional Ethics
This activity gives you the opportunity to consider your leadership style, values, attitudes, behaviors, and norms that will guide how you will lead others and how you will lead intentionally—strategically. Morrie seemed to grasp the notion that his leadership was of value to others, even in his final days. What do you think they said about him in the eulogy? Likely, they spoke of legacy. For this activity, you will consider your leadership legacy and guiding principles. You will create a one-page, infographic to demonstrate your personal leadership credo. Yes, this activity is similar to the one you created before. This time, however, it is about your leadership philosophy. You can use technology such as Canva, PPT, or Word to create a one-page expression of your learning. Creating our own patterns helps us to learn. This one-pager connects to both the verbal and visual learning styles, to what you’ve read and experienced from the Mitch Album reading,Tuesdays with Morrie.Again, you’ll have the opportunity to connect words, images, and personal values. In short, this one-pager becomes a metaphor for the learning you’ve done. I have included two sample one-pagers to help guide your work. Your one-page, illustration should: Highlight at least three personal values that will guide your leadership. (Values statements) Make a personal statement about what you’ve read, viewed, or experienced as you’ve interacted with the reading. (Morrie Take away) Discuss at least two operating norms that will guide your leadership. (What behaviors will be observable from your leadership? Think about styles and the characteristics we discussed of those top ten.) Be creative and engaging. Pasadena City College Components of Intercultural Communication Discussion
This paper requires you to apply the components of intercultural communication (5 key concepts from chapters 6-10 (choose 1 concept from each attached ppts of each chapter)) to a video from the choices below: Amazon: A League of Their Own (PG) or Megamind (PG) Disney+: Soul (PG), Coco (PG) any Toy Story (G), Encanto (PG), Raya (PG) Hulu: Abominable (PG), 50 First Dates (PG-13), Parasite (R) Netflix: The Help (PG-13), The Princess and the Frog (G), The Midnight Sky (PG-13) You should have an introduction paragraph (describing the video overview), five body paragraphs (meaning five examples to support your thesis of each of the 5 concepts you choose), and a conclusion. A paragraph is 5-8 sentences. FORMAT Introduction: Start with an attention getter/hook. You will begin by introducing the video. Then include a purpose statement or thesis that explains the analysis that includes the terms you are using in your analysis. Then you will include a transition sentence that leads into your analysis. Body You will include 5 body paragraphs, each with an example of communication in the video that relates to interpersonal communication. Please highlight, bold, oritalicize the concepts. You must include examples when evaluating the event. I want to know what happened specifically. You will describe what the concept means, what you saw in the movie that displayed this concept, then relate this to your life. For example (Coco): “The Rivera family’s rich culture is the strongest part of Miguel’s character. Miguel disclosed to the mariachi that he was a musician, but had never told his family, because they do not like music. This relates to the concept collectivism. Collectivism is when culturally, people come together and work for the greater good within the community. Originally, Miguel did not want to disclose his desire to become a musician with his family, because he was worried about disrupting the family culture. This shows that Miguel and his family are collectivistic. My family is also collectivistic. When I chose to go to college, it had a lot to do with my family’s expectations of me, and my role within my family. Collectivism can relate to context.” Please include transition statements between paragraphs (the last sentence is an example of a transition statement). Conclusion Finally, the paper should end with a brief conclusion paragraph (with a recap), including what you learned about interpersonal communication by watching this video. Chapter 7 Barriers to Intercultural Communication Ethnocentrism: Judging other cultures based on your own culture and the corresponding beliefs, values, and behaviors. Ethnocentrism & Stereotypes In reality: o Alaska can fit inside the continental U.S. about three times. o […]
